(PLAYOFFS - Ale
House vs. Albany Steel - 8/18/97 -
ROUND TWO - BEST OF THREE - GAME 2)
Albany Steel jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first
inning and never trailed. This game represented the type
of season the Ale House had due to injuries, trades,
changes, and turmoil. The Ale House bats were silent,
except for a brief seventh inning rally, many players
were out of position and errors proved to be fatal. These
are all characteristics that don't usually correlate to
the Ale House team. Sean O'Bryan pitched a valiant
effort. The final score was 11-5 in favor of Albany
Steel. Albany Steel takes the series 2-0 and moves on to
the league championship.
The Ale House team sincerely appreciates the fan enthusiasm, the support of the Ale House and of Brian Gilchrist. Our 1997 record of 20-7 does little to comfort our season goal of winning the championship. Between 1996 and 1997 the Ale House compiled a record of 46-12 with no ring. We want a championship. As Shane Quackenbush stated at the end of the game, "it is one of the hardest things for a manager to do, but changes will be made". The Ale House softball team will be back. We will re-build and re-load. Thank you again for all of your support.
(PLAYOFFS - Ale
House vs. Albany Steel - 8/15/97 -
ROUND TWO - BEST OF THREE - GAME 1)
The Ale House jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first inning, only to have Albany Steel add two in the
bottom. The Ale House then tied the score in the top of
the third, but left another two men on base. Albany Steel
scored two runs in the fifth on a long drive to the
fence. Offensively the Ale House bats were quiet and
Albany Steel played a good defensive game. The Ale House
left a number of men on base and a couple errors figured
in the loss. Sean O'Bryan pitched well enough to win. The
final score was 4-2 in favor of Albany Steel. Albany
Steel leads the series 1-0.
(PLAYOFFS - Ale
House vs. Opus Cafe - 8/14/97 -
ROUND ONE - BEST OF THREE - GAME 3)
The Ale House broke out of their batting slump to win the
decisive third game in round one of the playoffs.
Tensions were high, but the Ale House was focused.
Powered with home runs by Dennis Ned and Sean Baker, the
Ale House bats exploded in a quick fifteen run ruled
shortened five inning game. Every Ale House player had
atleast one hit, with Shane Quackenbush going 4-4 (5
RBIs), Mark Squadere 4-4, Dennis
Ned 2-3, John Anderson 2-3, Jimmy Clinton 1-2 and Michael
Labanowski with a double and a run scored. Sean O'Bryan
stepped up to pitch one of his best games of the season.
The final score was 17-2. The Ale House wins the series
2-1. Round two starts against the divisional leader
Albany Steel Friday night.
(PLAYOFFS - Ale
House vs. Opus Cafe - 8/8/97 -
ROUND ONE - BEST OF THREE - GAME 2)
Opus Cafe jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first
inning. The Ale House then shut out Opus Cafe for four
innings and built a 11-3 lead as the bats started to
break out. The bottom of the sixth inning almost proved
to be fatal for the Ale House as the Opus Cafe, through
walks and errors, erased all but one run to bring the
score to 11-10. In the top of the seventh, the Ale House
scored two more. The Opus Cafe threaten in the bottom of
the seventh, putting two men on base with no outs. A
quick pop out and a double play ended the game. Sean
O'Bryan came back to start for the Ale House and take the
win. Mark Squadere scored a couple runs and went
2-3 and Michael Labanowski went 2-3 with a double, stolen
base and a run scored. The final score was
13-10. The Series is tied 1-1.
(PLAYOFFS - Ale
House vs. Opus Cafe - 8/7/97 -
ROUND ONE - BEST OF THREE - GAME 1)
The Ale House almost had to start with nine players and
as a result of the confusion, found it difficult to find
the rhythm.. Sean O'Bryan missed the first playoff game
due to his suspension so Sean Baker stepped in to pitch.
Sean pitched good enough to win, but the Ale House did
not back him up. Opus Cafe jumped out to a quick 4-0
start and then built a 9-0 lead. Although the Ale House
started to come back in the sixth and seventh inning, the
deficit proved difficult to overcome. The positive from
this game was the fact that the Ale House bats started to
come alive and that Bill Saunders went yard. In order to
win Friday night, the Ale House team must get back to the
fundamentals, cut down on errors, hit, and stay focused.
The final score was 11-7 in favor of Opus Cafe. Opus
leads the series 1-0.
(End of regular
season - 1997)
(Ale House vs. Tommy's Tavern -
8/5/97)
Enthusiasm was high as Bill Saunders came to the game
after his wife delivered a baby girl at 9:24am. The Ale
House started out with a quick 1-0 lead, but Tommy's came
back to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. The
Ale House bounced back to go ahead 4-3, but again Tommy's
came back to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth
inning. In the top of the seventh, the Ale House squeaked
out two runs to take the lead once again. In an explosive
bottom of the seventh, bases loaded, score tied, Sean
O'Bryan erupted over a blown call at he plate for a third
strike and was thrown out of the game. Don Coons came in
to pitch the final 2-2 count and walked the last batter.
Sean O'Bryan will miss the first playoff game as a result
of being thrown out. The final score was 7-6 in favor of
Tommy's Tavern.
(Ale House vs. Albany
Steel - 8/4/97)
The Ale House, once again, fielded a team with only three
players in there regular starting positions. It was a
night plagued with errors and a pitching lapse. Bill
Saunders was at the hospital with his wife expecting
their first child. It was an ugly game and one to quickly
forget. The final score was 14-1 in favor of Albany
Steel.
(Ale House vs. Bats
- 7/30/97)
It was the second shortest game of the season for the Ale
House and relatively quiet (Just like the first game
against Bats). The game started scoreless for the first
three innings. In the forth, the Ale House bats came
alive, including a home run by Bill Saunders. In the
sixth inning Sean Baker went yard and the Ale House
expanded their lead. Bats only run came from a passed
ball. Sean O'Bryan pitched a strong game to take the win.
Michael Labanowski had a walk and scored two runs, Bill
Saunders went 2-3 and Gary McGuffin went 2-4. The final
score was 9-1.
(Ale House vs. Off
Shore Marine- 7/29/97)
It was a game plagued with errors, but the Ale House
pulled through with a victory. The game was close until a
big forth inning by the Ale House including a monster
home run by Dennis Ned. Dennis went 3-3 and Sean O'Bryan
returned to the mound to take the win. Michael Labanowski
was 0-1 with a walk and a sacrifice RBI. The final score
was 9-5.
(Ale House vs. Alpha
Lanes - 7/23/97)
The Ale House took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second,
but Alpha Lanes quickly captured it back 2-1 in the
bottom of the inning. Michael Labanowski lead off the
third with a bunt single and Phil Lanoue drove him home
on a towering fly to the fence to tie the game. In the
forth, Bill Sanders hit one of his two home runs and the
Ale House took the lead for good. Gary McGuffin also
ended the game with a home run, Phil Lanoue had two
doubles and Michael Labanowski was 1-2 with a walk and
two runs scored. Sean Baker captured the win on the
mound. The final score was 11-6.
(Ale House vs. Bats
- 7/21/97)
It was the shortest game of the season for the Ale House
and relatively quiet. Sean Baker stepped in for the
vacationing Sean O'Bryan and pitched a smooth three hit
shut out. The Ale House bats were silent until the third
inning when a couple runs were scored. Phil Lanoue hit
one deep to the fence to drive in two runs and Michael
Labanowski went 1-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored. A
fundamentally sound game that still did not see the
explosive Ale House bats. The final score was 8-0.
(Ale House vs. Balls
& Strikes - 7/16/97)
Balls and Strikes were last year's champions and they
played hard and fought back to take the win over the Ale
House. The Ale House jumped out to a quick start in the
first inning, but Balls and Strikes quickly tied the
score. The Ale House took the lead again in the bottom of
fifth inning 7-4. Balls & Strikes picked up 2 runs in
the top of the sixth inning to bring the score to 7-6. In
the top of the seventh with two outs, men on first and
third and the count 2 balls and 2 strikes, what appeared
to be a called third strike was called a ball. The next
pitch was lined for a triple and an error scoring 3 runs
for Balls and Strikes. The final score was 9-7 in favor
of Balls & Strikes.
(Ale House vs. Ziggy's
- 7/11/97)
Once again, not a pretty game. The Ale House team started
three players in their regular position and had to fight
for this extra inning win. The Ale House jumped out to a
quick 3-0 start in the first inning with a home run by
Gary McGuffin. Ziggy's, only starting nine players, kept
fighting back and tied the score in the bottom of the
sixth and again in the bottom of the seventh inning. The
Ale House put on the rally caps in the eighth inning and
scored four runs. Ziggy's attempted a come back scoring
two in the bottom of the inning, but the game ended on a
double play. Gary McGuffin finished with two home runs,
Bill Saunders went yard once, Sean O'Bryan had two clutch
hits and Michael Labanowski went 2-5. . The final score
was 11-9 in extra innings.
(Ale House vs. Tommy's
Tavern - 7/3/97)
Not a pretty game. The Ale House team has been without
many of their regular roster players, and many people are
playing out of position. Although the Ale House never
trailed, there were many errors and it was a weak hitting
performance. Tommy's Tavern attempted a seventh inning
comeback, but Jimmy Clinton made a clutch play at second
base and Sean O'Bryan pitched a solid inning. Michael
Labanowski went 1-2 with a triple and a run scored, plus
a sacrifice. The final score was 8-7.
(Ale House vs. Hannaford
- 6/27/97)
Hannaford forfeited out of the league. The Ale House wins
1-0 by forfeit.
(Ale House vs. Phoenix
- 6/24/97)
Playing without stating pitcher Sean O'Bryan, the Ale
House continued their winning streak behind pitcher Sean
Baker. Gary McGuffin came back off the Disabled List to
start at second base and Don Coons came in to play
shortstop for the injury ridden Ale House. Hal Smith
continued with his hot bat going 3-4, while Shane
Quackenbush and John Anderson went the same. Michael
Labanowski was 1-3 with a sacrifice and one run scored.
The final score was 13-6.
(Ale House vs.
Ale House II - 6/20/97)
A game Troy, and the fans were anticipating. Suffering
from Mike Minick out six months with a torn Achilles
tendon and Gary McGuffin with a strained lower back, the
Ale House started with only 9 players. The Ale House
jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but then the Ale House II team
quickly erased the lead and made it 1-3 in the bottom of
the first inning. After the first, both teams played a
strong defensive battle. There were few, if any, errors.
As one fan said, "It was a good game". It took
until the top of the sixth for the Ale House to take a
4-3 lead. Sean O'Bryan pitched a solid game, especially
in the late innings when it was needed. Tom Martin and
Hal Smith came up with big hits. Tom went 3-4 for the
game. Michael Labanowski went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice.
The final score was 4-3.
(Ale House vs.
Opus Cafe - 6/18/97)
The Ale House jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but then the Opus
Cafe quickly erased the lead and made it 2-3 in the
bottom of the first inning. Although a lot of chatter
from the Opus Cafe team (apparently they think the Ale
House team is nothing but a bunch of old timers), the Ale
House took the lead for good in the third inning. Sean
O'Bryan pitched a solid game and Bill Saunders hit a home
run in the first game for the Ale House with the
"new league softballs" (totally lifeless balls
if you ask me). Michael Labanowski went 2 for 4 with two
RBIs and one run scored. The final score was 13-4.
(Ale House vs. Mainello's
Pub - 6/10/97)
Mainello's scored a quick couple runs in the top of the
first inning, only to have the Ale House tie the score in
the bottom of the inning. After the first inning, the Ale
House team never trailed. Home runs by Mike Minick, Bill
Saunders, Sean O'Bryan and a monster shot by Gary
McGuffin propelled the Ale House to victory. Mainello's
attempted a rally in the top of the seventh inning with a
hard shot to the fence in right center field, but a
strong relay throw from Mark Squadere to Scott Brown to
Hal Smith at the plate choked the rally. Michael
Labanowski went 1-3. The final score was 11-6.
(Ale House vs. Buddy's
Buck's - 6/6/97)
A strong performance for the Ale House team. Shane
Quackenbush was 2-4 with a triple and a home run. Mike
Minick added a home run to go along with Jimmy Clinton's
3-3 performance. Michael Labanowski went 1-2 with a walk,
two runs scored and a three RBI triple. Sean O'Bryan
pitched a solid game. Dennie Ned came back off the
injured reserve list. The final score was 18-2 in a
fifteen run rule shortened game.
(Ale House vs. Phoenix
- 6/3/97)
Although not a "pretty" game, the Ale House
team once again came away victorious. Errors plagued both
teams and few actual hits were registered. The Phoenix
team jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the
first inning, but the Ale House came back to tie the
score 3-3 in the bottom of the first. The Ale House
maintained a narrow lead for the rest of the game. It
would be difficult to suggest that there were any
highlights. The final score was 8-6.
(Ale House vs. Mainello's
Pub - 5/31/97)
This was a make-up game from the rain out on 5/3/97. The
Ale House team came back relatively strong after their
first loss on Friday, May 30th to beat Mainello's Pub.
Home runs by Gary McGuffin, Mike Minick and two by Sean
Baker secured a 24-14 win.
(Ale House vs.
Roxy Cleaners- 5/30/97)
The Ale House suffered their first loss of the year to
Roxy Cleaners. This was a poor showing by the Ale House
team, offensively and defensively. The final score was
8-7 in favor of Roxy Cleaners. Enough said. We still
visited our favorite pub, The Ale House!
(Ale House vs.
Hannaford - 5/23/97)
This was a make-up game from the rain out on 5/9/97. The
Ale House team started out early with a home run by
Dennis Ned in the first inning of this 2 1/2 hour game.
The game then broke open after a good hitting by the team
and additional home runs by Bill Saunders, Gary McGuffin
and the first of the year by John Anderson. Sean O'Bryan
had a good outing on the mound and Michael Labanowski
went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. The final score
was 17-8.
(Ale House vs.
In The Rough - 5/16/97)
In the past, In the Rough has had the best of the Ale
House team. It looked like that would b the case during
this game, especially in frigid and unique May weather.
The Ale House jumped out to a 2-0 lead after home runs by
Gary McGuffin and Shane Quackenbush in the first inning.
From then on, the lead changed after each inning. It was
not a fundamentally sound game, but in the end, Sean
O'Bryan pitched two solid innings after a rocky start and
struck out the finally hitter on a called strike.
Additional homers by Dennis Ned and Sean O'Bryan helped
to secure the third win of the season for the Ale House.
The final score was 20-18.
(Ale House vs.
Albany Steel - 5/13/97)
A tough, hard fought game for the Ale House team. The
game started with the Ale House up by two after home runs
by Gary McGuffin and Mike Minick (Mike hit the left field
foul pole on the fly). Albany Steel came back to take a
4-2 lead into the middle of the sixth inning. A triple by
Scott Brown, a long triple by Shane Quackenbush and an
inside the park home run by Gary McGuffin in the bottom
of the sixth put the Ale House on top for good at 5-4.
Sean O'Bryan pitched a strong game and a perfect seventh
inning to seal the win. Michael Labanowski was 0-2, but
played a strong right field.
(Ale House vs.
Opus Cafe - 5/8/97)
Although behind by three by the middle of the first
inning, the Ale House team staged a huge rally in the
third inning scoring in excess of 25 runs. Homers by Gary
McGuffin, Shane Quackenbush, Bill Saunders, Sean O'Bryan
and Dennis Ned capped a hitting barrage. Michael
Labanowski went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two singles
plus a walk and a stolen base. An excellent game for the
season opener. The final score was 34-6.
