Game Highlights

(PLAYOFFS - Ale House vs. Ale House II - 9/1/98 - CHAMPIONSHIP - BEST OF FIVE - GAME 5)
The last great game in a great series in a great year.  Ale House II jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first.  The Ale House exploded for five runs in the third, including a three RBI single by Bill Saunders.  Ale House II, as demonstrated time and time again, fought back with thee in the bottom of the third and then tied the game in the bottom of the forth.  New game.  Every out was a critical out.  Defense was key.  Ale House II kept putting on the pressure.  Dean Lapham's solo home run in the sixth put the Ale House up.  One run was not enough against a great team such as Ale House II (1997 Champions).  Mike Minick then went yard in the top of the seventh to put the Ale House up by two.  Labanowski caught the first two quick outs in right in the bottom of the seventh.  The feeling was good, but the the pressure was on.  Things then got interesting. Within a blink, Ale House II with two outs, down two had two men on base.  Who was going to step up?  A quick pitch by O'Bryan, a confusing grounder between first and second.  Bag, bag out at first.   The final score was 7-5.  Ale House wins the championship!

The Ale House team sincerely appreciates the fan enthusiasm, the support of the Ale House and of Brian Gilchrist.  Our 1998 record of 23-8 was a total team effort.  Everyone contributed and we stood as a team.   Shane Quackenbush had a great playoff.  Jewett was a rock at second.   McGuffin came to play.  Minick came off the DL to give a huge boost.   Dennis Ned hit big when needed.  Anderson was a vacuum at third.  Scott Brown had to handle the pressures at short.  Saunders had key hits and demonstrated blazing speed (for him).  O'Bryan re-focused and keep his head "in-it".   Lapham had the sweat swing and the spunk of a fire-cracker.  Labanowski played his role.  Baker was there when we needed him, as was Ed Cherette.  Larry, our consistent fan, was always there, win or lose.  It was a long span of some very successful seasons for the Ale House.  The Championship is sweet.

As the Ale House contemplates coming back next year to defend, we again thank you for all of your support.  Maybe we'll take the local hoop championship before year end.

Pictures to come...

(PLAYOFFS - Ale House vs. Ale House II - 8/20/98 - CHAMPIONSHIP - BEST OF FIVE - GAME 1)
The subway series began.  The game was full of action, some not so positive.   Both teams struggled defensively. The Ale House jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but then Ale House II came right back with eight runs in the bottom of the inning.  Although the Ale House kept battling back, Ale House II kept scoring runs when they needed them and never released the lead.  Sean O'Bryan had a two run homer.  The final score was 16-10 in favor of Ale House II. The Ale House plans to re-focus and re-load for game two.  Ale House II leads the series 1-0.

(PLAYOFFS - Ale House vs. North End Pub - 8/14/98 - ROUND TWO - BEST OF THREE - GAME 2)
An action packed game.  The Ale House jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  The Ale House then added six more runs by the top of the fifth making the score 7-3.  In the bottom of the fifth the North End Pub rallied to tie the game.   In the bottom of the sixth inning North End Pub added two more runs to take the lead 9-7.  The top of the seventh was the Ale House's last opportunity to tie or take the lead.  Michael Labanowski lead off with a single and went to second on Gary McGuffin's bunt.  Labanowski went to third and McGuffin to second on a wild pitch.   Shane Quackenbush then hit a sacrifice to deep left center to score Labanowski and move McGuffin, the tying run, to third.  Lapham hit a fly for the second out.   Bill Saunders then stepped up with a liner to left to score McGuffin and tie the game.  Tommy Jewett and Sean Baker then reached base and Sean O'Bryan hit a single to left center to add two more.  The Ale House was up 11-9 in the top of the seventh.   The bottom of the seventh was not without action.  The first North End Pub batter reached on a walk and the next batter popped out.  The next batter reach on a squeezer between first and second.  Another walk and the bases are loaded for North End Pub.  A line out to McGuffin at shortstop left the North End Pub with two outs, the bases loaded and down two runs.  The last North End Pub batter hit a hard shot to Jewett who threw to McGuffin for the final force out at second.  The final score was 11-9. The Ale House wins the series 2-0.  The Ale House plays the Ale House II in the Championship.

(PLAYOFFS - Ale House vs. North End Pub - 8/12/98 - ROUND TWO - BEST OF THREE - GAME 1)
It was an excellent game.  Defense for both teams was solid and the pitching kept both offenses in check.  North End scored their only run in the top of the fifth on a double error.  Bill Saunders then came back for the Ale House in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to deep center.  Both teams threatened on several occasions.  The scored remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning.   Shane Quackenbush lead off with a hard single and then scored on Dean Lapham's double to the right field corner.  The final score was 2-1. The Ale House leads the series 1-0.

(PLAYOFFS - Ale House vs. Mainello's Pub - 8/7/98 - ROUND ONE - BEST OF THREE - GAME 2)
Mainello's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  In the top of the third the Ale House tied the game beginning with a two run double by Shane Quackenbush that scored Dennis Ned and Michael Labanowski.  Mainello's went up by one in the forth and then the Ale House came back in the fifth.  Both team were scraping runs.   A few errors took away from a competitive game.  In the top of the seventh, Dean Lapham went yard to put the Ale House up 11-5.  Mainello's staged a comeback scoring two in the bottom of the seventh before the rally was stopped.  Sean Baker stepped in to pitch a solid game.  Other noteworthy plays included a rare two walk night by Tommy Jewett and a 15 foot head first slide by Gary "baseball" McGuffin into second.  The final score was 11-7. The Ale House wins the series 2-0.

(PLAYOFFS - Ale House vs. Mainello's Pub - 8/5/98 - ROUND ONE - BEST OF THREE - GAME 1)
The Ale House jumped out to a 1-0 lead after two.  In the top of the third Mainello's tied the game.  The bottom of the third was the break out inning for the Ale House as seven runs were scored.  The game lacked any energy after the third inning until Dean Lapham went yard in the sixth.   Everyone was involved in the offense, the defense was strong and Sean O'Bryan pitched a solid game.  The final score was 11-4. The Ale House leads the series 1-0.

Alpha Lanes Forfeit.  The Ale House wins the last regular season game.

(Ale House vs. ProTech - 7/28/98)
What would you expect from the game after a suspended game?  It wasn't pretty.   ProTech started with nine players, added one before the first inning was over and then had one thrown out before the inning was done.  Dennis Ned had a three run homer and Michael Labanowski was 2-3 with a run scored.  The final score was 7-6.

(Ale House vs. Valenti's Pub - 7/24/98 - Game 2)
Reeling from the game one loss, the Ale House came out flat and almost let the second game slip away.  Valenti's Pub jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and was up 9-2 after the second.  The Ale House then started climbing back.  The defense shored up, Jack Brock started mixing up the pitches and the bats came alive.   The bottom of the sixth was the break out inning.  Michael Labanowski started the rally with a hard shot past third and scored on Mike Minick's double to right center.   Scott Brown reached base and scored on Shane Quackenbush's homer, his second of the game.  Then Bill Saunders, John Anderson and Ed Cherette homered.  This created positive momentum as the Ale House moves into the final week of the regular season.   The final score was 18-12.

(Ale House vs. Albany Steel - 7/24/98 - Game 1)
The game could have gone either way.  Both teams traded the lead several times before the game was final.  The Ale House had a couple defensive errors that may have been the factor.  Albany Steel had two homer runs, as did Bill Saunders and John Anderson for the Ale House.  With Sean O'Bryan absent, Jack Brock started at pitcher.   The Ale House made a valiant attempt at a seventh inning rally when Bill Saunders lined a seed to left center with one on.  A great catch was made that stalled any last attempt to tie the game.  The final score was 12-10 in favor of Albany Steel.

(Ale House vs. Alpha Lanes - 7/22/98)
It was a game that should have never been played.  Alpha Lanes was struggling for players and started with only nine and a substitute pitcher.  The Ale House offense took advantage of the situation and went on a scoring barrage.  Dean Lapham, Bill Saunders and Sean Baker homered with John Anderson going deep twice.  Everyone got involved in the offense and Sean Baker pitched a shut-out.  The final score was 25-0.

(Ale House vs. North End Pub - 7/16/98)
The Ale House maintained their momentum leading into the playoffs by beating the division leader.  The score stayed close through four innings and both teams were defensively solid.  North End Pub held the lead 4-3 in the fifth when Dean Lapham hit a three run homer to put the Ale House ahead.  Dennis Ned then put the game to rest in the bottom of the sixth with a grand slam home run.  Sean O'Bryan pitch very well, getting first pitch strikes on most batters.  Mike Minick, back from the DL, had two hits as did Tom Jewett.  The final score was 10-4.

(Ale House vs. ProTech - 7/13/98)
Ugly.  The game started out fine.  ProTech jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead.  The Ale House jumped back with two runs.  The Ale House defense was tight, ProTech's was not.  Along with a few key hits, errors plagued a nine run forth inning for the Ale House.  A controversial call against ProTech at second base started havoc.  The umpires lost control and suspended the game.  A game suspension in amateur softball?  Sean O'Bryan was looked crisp and the Ale House continued their positive momentum.  The score at game suspension was 11-1 in the top of the fifth inning with two outs.

(Ale House vs. Villa Valenti's Pub - 7/10/98)
The Ale House team stayed focused, brought the bats and put together a solid defensive game.  Everyone contributed defensively and offensively.  Once again, John Anderson and Dean Lapham (also his birthday) went yard.  Bill "Flash" Saunders, in a rare display of speed, stole his first base of the season.  The "Flash" also stretched out two remarkable doubles.  Jack Brock, stepping in for an absent Sean O'Bryan, pitched exceptionally well.  Scott Brown was behind the plate, lead off and scored three times.  Lastly, congratulations go out to Shane Quackenbush who took his last exam at law school.  He missed the team bus again, but he made the team party.  The final score was 15-0.

(Ale House vs. Albany Steel - 7/7/98)
The Ale House got it back on track.  The defense was solid and the offense was broad.  Home runs by Dean Lapham and John Anderson capped a good performance by the Ale House.  Ed Cherette stepped in to go 3-4 with two triples and Sean O'Bryan looked strong.  Although Albany Steel jumped out to a 4-1 lead early, the Ale House kept the focus and prevailed.  The win put the Ale House is sole possession of second place in their division, behind North End Pub.  The final score was 11-4.

(Ale House vs. North End Pub - 6/29/98)
Controversial.  That sums up the ending to the game.   The North End Pub jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  The Ale House then added four runs, in part due to a three run homer by Tom Jewett.  The North End battled back to tie the score. In the top of the fifth the Ale House took the lead at 5-4.  In the bottom of the fifth the North End, with a three run homer, went ahead 8-5.  In the top of the seventh, Dean Lapham stepped up and tied the game with a three run dinger to right.  On an aggressive running play, Sean Baker was thrown out at home to end the top of the seventh for the Ale House, leaving the score at 8-8.  Sean Baker, who had pitched a good outing, got into a bit of a jam and loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth.  With no outs, the North End Pub popped up to third base.  Normally this would invoke the infield fly rule, but no-one heard the umpire call out.  Just as confusing, no-one from the Ale House caught the ball.  The ball dropped between the pitcher and third base, leaving one out through the infield fly rule.  The ball rolled to home plate where Tom Jewett tagged out the running from third; two outs.   Jewett then threw to second for the tag for a triple play.  The score remained tie and the Ale House ran off the field to start the eighth inning.  Then the umpires converged, reversing the play at home suggesting that Tom dropped the ball on the tag at home plate.  Game over.  The final score was 9-8 in favor of North End Pub.

(Ale House vs. Mainello's Pub - 6/25/98)
Not a pretty game.  Both teams played with nine players and little enthusiasm was generated.  Although the Ale House generated runs, the offense still failed to run on all cylinders and many were produced on errors.  The defense, however, was solid as was the pitching by Sean O'Bryan.  Gary McGuffin had an inside the park home run and Bill Saunders had two solid hits.  To document some of the comic plays, Michael Labanowski rounded the bases and scored on a routine fly to shallow right.   The final score was 9-2.  An ugly win is better than an ugly loss!

(Ale House vs. Ale House II - 6/23/98)
The Ale House received a good old fashion butt whipping from the Ale House II team.   You can't win games when you have only two hits and you score one run on an error.  The Ale House II team played a well executed game and our hats are off to them.  Time to re-focus and re-load.  The final score was 11-1 in favor of the Ale House II.

(Ale House vs. ARC - 619/98)
A replay of the first game with the ARC?  The Ale House jumped out in the top of the first inning with five quick runs.   The ARC added two in the bottom of the first.  The ARC kept picking their way back with runs.  Defensively is wasn't the Ale House's best performance. The Ale House lead by one run going into the top of the seventh, but the ARC then scraped in two more runs for the final win.  Sean O'Bryan started on the mound with Sean Baker coming on in the fifth.   The bright note was that Mike Minick returned to the line-up after over 300 days rehabilitating from a ruptured Achilles tendon.  Mike singled to center in his only at bat.  The final score was 10-9 in favor of the ARC.

(Ale House vs. Villa Valenti's Pub - 6/10/98)
It was an unusually quiet night at the Knickerbocker fields in Troy, NY.  The Ale House, just coming off a tough loss, re-focused and pulled out a much tighter game than need be.  Eighty percent of the balls hit during the game were pop flies and it wasn't until the forth inning that a string of key hits propelled the Ale House.  The two most import runs were those scored in the bottom of the sixth inning as it was the top of the seventh that the Villa Valenti's Pub rallied to score three runs and nearly tie the game.  Dean Lapham had an inside the park home run and Bill Saunders and John Anderson had a couple key hits.  Shane Quackenbush was due to have a great game, but he missed the team bus.   Lastly, Mike Minick came off the disabled list after a year of rehabilitation due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.  The final score was 8-7.

(Ale House vs. North End Pub - 6/9/98)
The Ale House defense, which has played superb as of late, slipped up.  Bill Saunders and Dean Lapham provided some spark with home runs, but little other offensive was present.  North End turned a key double play in the sixth inning and played a solid game.  Although the loss was disappointing, it will allow the Ale House to re-load for the next game.  The final score was 9-3 in favor of North End Pub.

(Ale House vs. Albany Steel - 6/5/98)
The game started out slow.  Albany Steel jumped to a quick three run lead and the first eight Ale House batters were retired in order.  In the top of the third, Scott Brown and Michael Labanowski lead off with singles and then the Ale House exploded for 8 runs.  The night was highlighted with home runs by Dennis Ned, Dean Lapham, Bill Saunders and Mike Lans.  Sean O'Bryan throw well and mixed in the off speed stuff striking our several batters.  The final score was 11-4.

(Ale House vs. Alpha Lanes - 6/1/98)
"It was a home run juggernaut" said Bill Saunders.  Home runs by Dean Lapham, Tommy Jewett, Sean Baker and two towering shots by John Anderson put the Ale House offense in motion.  Everyone got involved.  The defense continued to be strong, especially the third base play of Mike Lans.  Sean O'Bryan stayed focused and pitched a solid game.  The final score was 18-3.

(Ale House vs. Mainello's Pub - 5/29/98)
Sean O'Bryan pitched a superb game and the defense was solid once again. Although the Ale House offense is still below expectations, runs were generated when needed.   Mike Milliman came back with a strong 3-4 performance and a capped his night with a three run homer to center. Sean O'Bryan also helped his cause going 3-4.  Tommy Jewett's aggressive defense at second continues to marvel the crowd.  The final score was 11-2.

(Ale House vs. Valenti's Pub - 5/22/98)
It was solid defensive performance buy the Ale House, and the bats finally started to come alive. Although the score was tied 5-5 going into the forth inning, Michael Labanowski led off with a single, reached second on an error and was driven in by Sean O'Bryan. Shane Quackenbush then reached base, as did Sean Baker and then Tommy Jewett went yard. This was the catalyst the Ale House needed to bring in the win. Sean O'Bryan pitched and excellent game and Tommy Jewett made two relay throws from Michael Labanowski to put out runners at the plate and third base, each killing potential rally's by Valenti's Pub. The final score was 12-6.

(Ale House vs. Ale House II - 5/19/98)
It was a defensively sound game on both sides of the field.  Sean O'Bryan was on the mound for the Ale House and Tinker for Ale House II.  Ale House II jumped out to a two run lead, but the Ale House came back in the bottom of the first with four runs.   The game was tied going into the bottom of the sixth, when the Ale House scored two more runs.  The Ale House II made it interesting by scoring one more run in the top of the seventh with two outs, but they stranded two base runners to end the game.   Dennis Ned made two excellent catches in left field and Gary McGuffin played an inspirational game.  The final score was 6-5.

(Ale House vs. ARC - 5/15/98)
The Ale House jumped out in the bottom of the first inning with two quick runs.   ARC added one in the second and the Ale House added another two runs.  The ARC kept picking their way back with runs.  In the forth, John Anderson brought in one more run for the Ale House with a homer to center field.  The ARC then scraped in two more runs.  Sean Baker started on the mound with Sean O'Bryan coming on in the fifth.  The Ale House offense struggled, but the defense was solid.   The final score was 6-5 in favor of the ARC.

(Ale House vs. Villa Valenti's Pub - 5/8/98)
The season opener was not a model of softball perfection.  For the most part, it was the first practice of the season that included live pitching.  As a result, the fundamentals need tuning and the team needs to get in synch.  The Ale House opening line-up included four new faces who we expect to help capture the league championship and the Ale House team goal is nothing short of that. Sean O'Bryan open the season on the mound and gave up only two hits, but eleven walks.  Although there were no spectacular plays, the team played well enough to win.  The final score was 10-4.
