Game Highlights

The 2001 Ale House season is officially over.  The team would like to say  "Thank You" to Brian Gilchrist and the Ale House for sponsorship and to all of the great fans who supported our team.  See you next season!

(PLAYOFFS - Round One - Best of Three - Game 3)
Ale House vs. Ale House II - 8/17/01)
An interesting game would be one way to describe it.  The Ale House jumped out to a quick 3-0 start, only to have Ale House II slowly fight back to 3-2.  In the bottom of the fifth Ale House II put a man on first and then attempted to sacrifice the man to second.  It not only worked, but the bunter reached first safety on a head first slide.  As John Leone paced around the mound, the runner on second started to steal third.  John attempted a toss to John Anderson at third, but the ball got away.  The runner on third scored and the runner at first came all the way around to score.  One might reason that the ball was dead while the pitcher was in the pitching circle, but apparently, none of the umpires were looking at the mound (there is no actual chalked circle) and as such the umpires let the play stand.  In the bottom of the sixth, on an attempted play at the plate by Ale House II, the runner slid around Kevin Canfield, who missed the initial tag, but the umpire called the runner out for running/sliding out of the baseline.  A fury erupted and Bob Lord of Ale House II was ejected from the game.  The Ale House made one last valiant attempt to win the game in the top of the seventh.  Shane Quakenbush lead off with a single and Dennis Ned walked.  Two on and no-one out.  On a bounced ball at the plate, Shane attempts to steal third, but is thrown out as Ned goes to second.  Todd Nelson grounds to third, and replace runner Michael Labanowski goes to third.  Man on third, two out and Bill Saunders at the plate.  Known for his heroics, he hits a long deep fly to the center field fence.  Game over.  The final score was 4-3 in favor of Ale House II.  Ale House II wins the best of three series 2-1.  Good luck in the championship Ale House II!

(PLAYOFFS - Round One - Best of Three - Game 2)
Ale House vs. Ale House II - 8/15/01)
Another classic battle with Ale House II.  Ale House II went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The Ale House slowly battled back and took the lead in the third.  Ale House II never gives up and as such they kept picking away at the lead.  The Ale House almost beat themselves several times, but a clutch double play in the top of the seventh ended the Ale House II threat.  The final score was 11-9.  The best of three series is tied at 1-1.

(PLAYOFFS - Round One - Best of Three - Game 1)
Ale House vs. Ale House II - 8/8/01)
On a hot and humid night, the classic battles between the Ale House teams continue.  The Ale House jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Scott Paul's deep homer to left center.  The Ale house added another run in the third but the Ale House II, as they are well known, didn't give up and tied the game.  The Ale House II then went ahead in the forth, but the Ale House tied in the fifth.  The Ale House II then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Going down without a fight was not an option for the Ale House, so collectively they put together a string hits with two out to added another four runs, yet that is were the rally ended.  The final score was 11-7 in favor of Ale House II.  Ale House II leads the best of three series 1-0.

(Ale House vs. ProTech - 8/2/01 - Final Game of the regular season)
Both teams were battling for position heading into the playoffs.  The Ale House jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but then ProTech went up 4-2 in the bottom of the forth.  The Ale House added one run in the fifth and then took the lead in the top of the sixth after some clutch hitting by Dennis Ned and Shane Quackenbush.  Not looking to be out done, ProTech came right back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  The Ale House couldn't get anything started in the top of the seventh.  The final score was 7-5 in favor of ProTech.

(Ale House vs. Ale House II - 7/26/01)
Once again the Ale House vs. Ale House II match-up proved to be a good one.  The Ale House slowly built a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, when Ale House II started to rally.  The score was 6-5 heading in the bottom of the sixth when, with two out and the bases loaded, Brian Squires took a line drive to the groan.  Unfortunately, Brian was taken off the field by the EMS squad, but it did appear Brian was OK.  It was hard to build any momentum after such an event, but Mike Bendon tried with a two run homer in the top of the seventh.  The final score was 13-8 in favor of Ale House II.

(Ale House vs. Scoreboard - 7/20/01)
It wasn't pretty, and it certainly didn't look like the Ale House team of late, but a win is a win.  Brian Squires held Scoreboard to three runs and his in-side-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh capped the win.  The final score was 4-3.

(Ale House vs. Sunset Grill - 7/18/01)
The Ale House went into the game battling the second place team in the league, yet the Sunset Grill only showed up with nine players.  The last games of the season are critical as teams jockey for playoff position.  The Ale House started the top of the first inning with an inside the park lead off home run by Rick Ferrara and never looked back.  John Leone pitched a solid game and the Ale House played well all around.  The final score was 13-6.

(Ale House vs. Mahr's Place - 7/16/01)
The Ale House was looking to beat the pesky Mahr's Place for the first time this year, and a strong start in the first inning helped.  Except for one inning that looked like the keystone cops came to play, the Ale House took care of business and kept Mahr's Place at bay.  The final score was 9-4.

(Ale House vs. Emerald Club - 7/12/01)
Is the Ale House peaking at the right time?  Scott Paul had two hits and four RBIs in his return back to the line-up and Brian Squires held the Emerald Club to five runs on seven hits with three strike outs.  The final score was 15-5.

(Ale House vs. Ale House II - 7/10/01)
The games against Ale House II are a welcome change.  Two tough competitors playing no non-sense softball.  The games are always close and the games are fun to play.  Tonight was no different as both teams played well and the game could have gone either way.  Ale House II doesn't beat themselves, so you have to come to play ball.  The final score was 9-5.

(Ale House vs. Tony's Place - 7/6/01)
Ten days between games produces a sluggish team.  That was evident in this ho-hum game.  Nothing spectacular, except for Mike Bendon's two excellent throws from left field to nail one at third and another at home, both to kill a potential rally by Tony's Place.  The final score was 8-4

(Ale House vs. ProTech - 6/26/01)
After the whooping the Ale House took against ProTech in the first meeting, the team knew they needed to step up.  Although the offense never really exploded, they created enough to win.  The defense, except for a few mishaps, keep ProTech under control and John Leone pitched a good game.  The final score was 8-7.

(Ale House vs. Mahr's Place - 6/19/01)
You can't win softball games when you only score three runs.  No offense at all for the Ale House even though the Ale House and Brian Squire's pitching kept Mahr's Place in check for seven innings.   Mahr's Place rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning and the Ale House could only respond with one in the bottom of the eighth.
The final score was 5-3 in favor of Mahr's Place.

(Ale House vs. Ale House II - 6/15/01)
It was a roller coaster ride, but the Ale House got the job done.  The Ale House vs. Ale House II match-up is always a strong rivalry, especially given the stability and seniority of the Ale House II ball club.  Plus, both teams must fight for a seat at the Ale House after the game.  The Ale House jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Ale House II quickly came back.  The Ale House II then slowly built a 6-2 lead.  Scott Paul came into the game in the fifth and hit a three run homer to get the Ale House back in the game and make the score 6-5.  The Ale House keep the momentum and scored four more runs in the sixth.  The Ale House II came back with two runs.  Against the Ale House II, you need to scores runs and the Ale House scored two more in the top of the seventh.  Naturally, the Ale House II keep the pressure on, but the Ale House held up and finished the game victorious.  The final score was 11-8.

(Ale House vs. ProTech - 6/12/01)
It was a cross between the Keystone cops and a bad horror movie.  No offense, no defense.  It's hard to win when you don't score a run.  The final score was 15-0 in favor of ProTech.

(Ale House vs. Sunset Grill - 6/8/01)
With the Ale House two starting pitches out, Ron Ferrara took the mound and pitched well enough to win.  Unfortunately, the Ale House left the offense at home and provided little run support for Ron.  Even so, the game stayed close and competitive.  Few teams will win with the run total of the Ale House tonight.  The two teams will play one more regular season game for the rubber match.  The final score was 5-3 in favor of the Sunset Grill.

(Ale House vs. Scoreboard - 6/5/01)
A solid game for the Ale House all around.  The defensive was crisp, the offense was consistent and Brian Squires pitched a sharp game.  Rick
Ferrara even recorded an in-side-the-park home run.  The final score was 15-3.

(Ale House vs. Emerald Club - 6/1/01)
When you jump out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning, good things usually happen.  Poor pitching cost the Emerald Club and the Ale House offense went on a role.  John Leone pitched for the win and stepped in as a pitch hitter in the sixth inning to hit a towering home run.  The final score was 20-3.

(Ale House vs. Scoreboard - 5/30/01)
The Ale House jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a homer by Mike Bendon and another by Scott Paul in the top of the first inning.  The Ale House bats then went to sleep and the Scoreboard built a 10-4 lead.  It took the top of the sixth and a five run inning and then a breakout nine runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.  Everyone got on base in the seventh and everyone scored.  Brian Squires pitched the win behind some, shaky at times, defense.  The final score was 18-10.

(Ale House vs. Tony's Place - 5/25/01)
It was a quiet cool night at the Knickerbocker Fields before the Memorial Holiday.  Tony's Place jumped out to a 2-0 lead early and the Ale House had to battle back.  The defense had a few miscues, but Scott Paul started the comeback with a deep homer to center.  The Ale House then scored five in the fifth and Kevin
Canfield went yard in the sixth.  John Leone pitched a solid game and made it interesting in the seventh.  The final score was 7-5.

Rain Out!

(Ale House vs. Mahr's Place - 5/18/01)
It took the Ale House to the third inning to score.  That should have been the first sign.  The defense struggled and so did the offense.  John Leone started on the mound and  kept things within reach for most of the game.  Although some critical mis-guided plays placed the Ale House behind 5-3 going into the top of the seventh inning, the Ale House rallied for five much needed runs and went up 8-5.  If the Ale House holds defensively, the Ale House walks with a win.  The first batter lines to John Leone.  Then two bleeders down the right field line, a couple solid hits, and the Ale House loses in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The final score was 9-8 in favor of Mahr's Place.

(Ale House vs. Emerald Club - 5/16/01)
It was a cool quiet night at the Knickerbocker fields with the only noise coming for the swing of a bat.  The Ale House jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and built the lead from there.  A fair offensive performance and a good defensive performance.  Todd Nelson returned from the DL to start at shortstop and with Scott Brown at second it made for a solid combo.
Brian Squires went on to pitch a two hit shutout as the Ale House team took the win.  The final score was 12-0.

(Ale House vs. Tony's Place - 5/11/01)
It was a solid game for the Ale House with the defense holding back Tony's Place and the offense producing just enough runs.  The Ale House jumped out to the lead in the first inning and never looked back.  The entire team delivered defensively and offensively.
Brian Squires pitched a solid game, and although the bottom of the seven produced some anxiety, the Ale House held out to take the win.  John Anderson went yard.  The final score was 8-6.

(Ale House vs. Sunset Grill - 5/9/01)
The Ale House won the season opener in a wild one. Down 8-7 going into final inning, some new blood comes thru.  Jon Grosso singles to start the inning.  Recent call up and veteran free agent Brian Squires bunts to move the runner over and legs out a single. So with two on no outs veteran Scott Brown steps to the plate.  After failed bunt attempt and close call with two strikes, Brown doubles down the line scoring both Grosso and Squires.  Jack Brock scattered 15 hits, struck out one and walked one. He held the Sunset Grill scoreless for three innings and was at the mercy of some misplayed balls at critical times.  Scott Brown ended with 3 hits and Bendon, Saunders, Mennillo and Grosso all added two hits.  The final score was 9-8.
